Sweetcorn pollinates by dropping pollen from the male flowers onto the silks. Each silk strand belongs to one female flower inside the ear and – if it catches a pollen grain – it makes one kernel.

Growing corn about 20 cm apart in clusters, blocks or thick rows makes it easier for pollen to land on the silks.
