Sweetcorn (maize)

[Zea mays]

Sweetcorn pollinates by dropping pollen from the male flowers onto the silks. Each silk strand belongs to one female flower inside the ear and – if it catches a pollen grain – it makes one kernel.

Growing corn about 20 cm apart in clusters, blocks or thick rows makes it easier for pollen to land on the silks.

Sweet Alyssum

[Lobularia maritima]

Plant among fruit crops (like tomatoes, zucchini, capsicums, eggplants, melons, pumpkins, berries, apples, peaches) to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Grows about 20 cm tall, 30 cm wide, with white flowerheads and a light fragrance. Fits under your crops.
Try the flowers and greens in salads, in cold drinks, in tea, with chocolate.
